If you were in the situation where your coworker and friend had to go to the Amazon to talk to some deranged old lady about actually getting some work done and he (or she) never came back, would you take the initiative to go and find out what happened to him (or her)?
Dr. Marina Singh, the story’s protagonist, takes up the journey to visit the Amazon jungle because her coworker is said to be dead and his wife wants Dr. Singh to recover his body. Marina’s boss wants her to find Dr. Swenson, an eccentric woman in her 70s who won’t stop researching something that might change the world. You’ll have to read the book to find out more.
The best part of this book are the descriptions of South America which were based on the author Ann Patchett’s experiences around the equator. It’s not so completely factual that it will bore you because the storytelling is marvelous in the book. The swarms of mosquitoes, snakes, ants, and other deadly animals make appearances and tell the reader to beware.
